SURING, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Heavy rain and strong winds accompanied a line of severe thunderstorms across parts of the northwoods Sunday afternoon.
By the time the storms had ended, some communities had a lot of cleaning up to do.
One of those was Suring, in Oconto County.
Driving into town from the east, there was very little in the way of any damage to any trees or property.
That quickly changed as soon as you drove into the town of Suring.
There were downed trees, branches, and power lines across the town. Some trees fell on houses.
One of those houses belongs to Marge Shafman’s daughter. She spoke to WLUK.
“When I saw this, I just panicked and I just started crying, and I just called her immediately. And then I went home to make sure everything was good at my house, and I’ve been waiting for her ever since.”
But just to get back Suring in the first place, she had to drive through the storm.
“On my way home from Gillett, I got on the highway and I heard the tree hit behind me and I looked in the rear view mirror, and I had a tractor in front of me and one landed right in front of him.”
One silver lining, as you so often see in small communities, people coming together to help their neighbors.
Christopher Schroeder is one of those good Samaritans.
“We’re here helping out whoever we can… just trying to get the main stuff out of the way so people can get in and out of their houses, don’t have that burden of not being able to fall asleep nice when something is leaning against their house. That’s all we’re trying to do.”
But even with all the help, one town worker estimated it would take a few days to clean up everything.
