MADISON, WI (WTAQ-METRO) – The office of Wisconsin Attorney General Brad Schimel wants to keep Brendan Dassey in custody despite his conviction for a 2005 murder being overturned.
Dassey and his uncle, Steven Avery, were found guilty of the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc County, and their case was turned into the Netflix documentary “Making a Murderer,” which prompted calls for them to both be released.
Schimel’s office has filed a response to Dassey’s request to be freed while the state appeals the overturning of his conviction.
In the response, state lawyers argue keeping him locked up is in the best interest of the public and the victim’s family.
