APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – A woman has been formally charged with killing her husband in Appleton.
34-year-old Tina Hafeman has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, with a domestic violence penalty enhancer.
On Friday, police were called to a home in the 900 block of N. Durkee Street. Cops found Hafeman’s husband, Chad, with stab wounds. He was rushed to a hospital where he later died.
According to the criminal complaint, Tina and Chad Hafeman went out as a celebration Thursday night. They had been drinking into early Friday morning.
“Were the parties intoxicated? Yes. Was she intoxicated? Yes. Did officers note that? Is it in the criminal complaint in detail? Yes. Did her family note that when they arrived? Yes. So that definitely had a role in this,” explains Carrie Schneider the District Attorney for Outagamie County, per FOX 11.
The complaint states the Hafemans tended to fight when they were intoxicated. Tina Hafeman says she blacked out from drinking, but did recall seeing blood on her husband. Some of Tina’s family members say she went to them for help and admitted to stabbing Chad.
Schneider says the most disturbing revelation in the complaint is that the Hafemans’ children may have seen or heard what happened.
“All 6 children were home at the time when this occurred. We have statements that are in the criminal complaint that the youngest, a 5-year-old who describes what he saw and what he heard,” she says.
The child allegedly says he saw his mother hit his father hard in the stomach, then saw his father cough and blood on his father’s shirt. The autopsy found Chad Hafeman was stabbed in the abdomen.
Schneider says right now the children are staying with someone they know. She tells FOX 11 a counselor will evaluate whether they can visit Tina Hafeman.
“The kids would have to come here to the jail to go upstairs and meet with a social worker and then meet with Tina,” Schneider explains.
Tina Hafeman’s attorney declined to comment after court Tuesday.
On Tuesday the court commissioner set Hafeman’s bond at $500,000 cash.
