WAUSAU, WI (WTAQ) – A state appeals court has ruled against a northwest Wisconsin man who claimed he killed a neighbor’s pure-bred bull in self defense.
The 3rd District Appellate Court in Wausau has upheld a $5,000 damage award from a Rusk County judge against John Weinel, who’s now from Lakeville, Minnesota.
Court records show that Weinel was upset that David Shotliff’s bull kept breaking through his fence in the summer of 2013 — and in a final confrontation, the farmer ran to his pickup truck and shot the bull named “Vindicator” 14 times while it was 3-feet away.
In court, Weinel said he needed to shoot the animal before it harmed him, his children, his vehicle, or another fence line.
An employee of the neighboring farm testified that Weinel threatened to kill the animal about 20 minutes before gunshots sounded.
