MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – If Steven Avery gets pardoned, Governor Scott Walker will not be the one to do it.
The Republican Walker has refused to issue pardons throughout his more than five years in office.
And he won’t make an exception now, after the Netflix series “Making a Murderer” raised doubts about the convictions of Avery and his nephew Brendan Dassey in the brutal slaying of Teresa Halbach in Manitowoc County in 2005.
Four petitions on the White House website and Change.Org have attracted 425,000 signatures calling for pardons and/or federal investigations into the cases.
Because Avery and Dassey were convicted in state courts, only Walker can pardon them.
The governor says those who think they’re wrongly convicted should go to higher courts to have their sentences overturned.
