MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) – A Milwaukee-area Greek Orthodox priest accused of embezzling more than $100,000 from his former church will not spend any time in jail.
Father James Dokos pleaded guilty to stealing the money while he worked at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Wauwatosa.
As part of a plea deal, Dokos won’t spend any time in jail, but will do 40 hours of community service and stay out of trouble for one year.
Investigators say Dokos used money meant for the church for steak dinners and jewelry.
Church members from a parish outside of Chicago were also in court for the hearing. They said Dokos was sent there after stealing from the Wauwatosa church and they want him gone.
Prosecutors said Dokos has paid back the money to the church, and if he meets the terms of the plea deal, the theft charge is reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor, and he will have to pay a fine.
