MADISON, Wis (WSAU-Wheeler News) The U-W Board of Regents is expected to finalize its own tenure protections Friday)for faculty members at the 26 public campuses. The board does not plan an immediate vote on the changes — which would include procedures for dealing with sub-standard faculty performance, and layoff policies for program cuts and financial emergencies.
The governor and Legislature removed tenure protections from state law in 2015 as part of the current state budget. They also cut 250-million dollars in state funds to the U-W, and that raised concerns about talented faculty bolting to other schools for more money. On Thursday Chancellor Rebecca Blank told Regents that her school spent $8-million in the latter half of 2015 from a fund designed to keep the best instructors who are recruited elsewhere.
