TOMAH, WI (WSAU) The first of what could be hundreds of veterans possibly exposed to HIV and hepatitis at the Tomah VA Medical Center are getting tested. VA officials say two-dozen vets came forward yesterday to see if they’re infected.
A dentist re-used his own equipment to treat hundreds of patients. The equipment was washed between uses, but was not properly sterilized. A substitute dental assistant filed a complaint, although the practice had been taking place for nearly a year. During that time between 500 and 600 people were treated.
The dentist is no longer seeing patients, but he’s not been fired. His name has not been released. The VA’s inspector general is investigating.
