MADISON, WI (WSAU-WRN) — The top Republican in the Wisconsin state Assembly says he’s embarrassed to have GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump leading the party’s ticket this November.
In an open letter to fellow Republicans, state Assembly Speaker Robin Vos questions whether he’s proud of the GOP nominee, and said the answer is so obvious it hurts. “No. Actually, it’s even worse.”
The letter comes on the same day Trump is set to campaign in Wisconsin with a rally in Green Bay Friday night. Vos backed other candidates for the GOP presidential nominee during the primary season and was still hesitant to support Trump heading into the Republican National Convention last month.
Vos also cited serious concerns about Trump’s recent “kind words” for House Speaker Paul Ryan’s primary opponent, Paul Nehlen. The Rochester Republican said he was heartbroken by the move because it reveals a lack of judgment that he can’t look away from or forgive. “He might be able to repair the damage, but it can’t be ignored.”
Vos also questioned Trump’s lack of judgment since the party’s national convention, saying it should be a concern to even his most ardent supporters. The billionaire has been under fire for waging a very public feud with the Gold Star family of a soldier killed in Iraq after the parents of Captain Humayun Khan appeared on stage at the Democratic National Convention and criticized his past remarks about Muslims.
“Welcome to Wisconsin, Mr. Trump, but let’s get something straight – we are Ryan Republicans here in Wisconsin, not Trump Republicans,” Vos wrote. “Show us you are a real leader by standing in Green Bay today and joining nearly everyone in the conservative movement in endorsing Paul Ryan. Conservatives in Wisconsin are watching and hoping you do the right thing.”
