WAUSAU, Wis. — Three political heavyweights, and no speeches. That’s what the patrons of the 2510 Restaurant in Wausau saw late Sunday afternoon as presidential candidate Ted Cruz, Governor Scott Walker, and former candidate Carly Fiorina all greeted supporters, signed autographs, took a lot of pictures, and shook many hands.
The three, especially Cruz and Walker, stopped at nearly every table to greet people, shake hands, and ask for their votes Tuesday. Cruz’s wife Heidi was also with the campaign. She and Fiorina were just in Wausau Thursday at the local Cruz headquarters.
Wausau was a hotspot for campaigning this weekend. Donald Trump was at the Central Wisconsin Convention and Expo Center Saturday. His famous supporter from Alaska, Former Governor Sarah Palin followed that up with a stop at Zingers & Flingers, a gun and archery retailer and indoor range facility, on Sunday. Democrat Bernie Sanders packed the Grand Theater Sunday afternoon before the Cruz entourage stopped at the 2510 Restaurant.
Cruz leads Trump in the most recent Wisconsin polls, and Sanders leads Hillary Clinton in the Badger state, with less than two days before the primary election.
Candidates have spent a lot of time in Wisconsin, a state which usually doesn’t get much presidential attention because in most years, the two parties usually have enough delegates in one camp to determine who will be on the November ballot. Not this year. Wisconsin is important. Cruz supporters like Walker say a win here could begin to reverse the Trump trend of the past several months.
