MILWAUKEE (WSAU-Wheeler News) Milwaukee County transit union members have overwhelmingly turned down the county’s latest contract offer. The union says 92-percent of its bus drivers and mechanics rejected the deal and told the union’s executive board to order a strike if necessary.
The county offered a 1.5-percent pay hike by next April, plus cost-of-living increases of 1 to 2-percent a year.
The union also took issue with a plan to add part-time drivers with no benefits, but the county says no full-time drivers would have been replaced.
Union leaders want more talks. The transit system says it remains committed to reaching a fair deal.
About 750 Milwaukee transit employees have been working without a contract since April, with the exception of a three-day strike around the Fourth-of-July.
