GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The look for the building on North Jefferson Street will stay the same and so will the mission behind the iconic front steps.
The downtown YMCA is set to begin a $12.3 million makeover early next year, including upgrades to the structure, infrastructure and the functional use of the building itself.
$9.3 million has been raised to pay for the renovations.
And the historic building itself is eligible for more than $2 million more in tax credits.
Greater Green Bay YMCA President & CEO Steve Harty says before starting the blueprint, they checked in with members about what they wanted to see.
One feeling about the 90 year old building stood out.
Making no alterations to the look of the of the iconic 1925 architectural design.
So no changes there.
But a new glass facade on a 1968 expansion of the Y will give outsiders a look into the fitness center.
Harty hopes that will draw new members in.
Work should be done by summer of 2017.
