WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WTAQ) – Folks in central Wisconsin will get two reminders instead of one about the real reason they have a longer weekend.
The Wood County Veterans’ Memorial in Wisconsin Rapids is holding its ceremony Friday instead of Memorial Day, which is Monday.
Kelly Tomfohrde’s name will be inscribed on the memorial. The 22-year-old Air National Guard mechanic from Auburndale died April 5th, after she fell five stories from a window while she was deployed in Japan.
Friday’s ceremony will also honor Jack Kahoun, the driving force behind the creation of the Wood County Veterans’ Memorial. He died in January at age 88.
Organizer Nancy Quick says the ceremony is held Friday instead of Monday so more people can attend.
She says a lot of military groups plan other activities on Memorial Day. And with school in session, it’s easier to get entire classes to attend before they get spread out for the three-day weekend.
