STEVENS POINT, WI (WTAQ) – One of two men accused of providing the heroin that killed a UW-Stevens Point student has pleaded no contest to a reduced charge.
Erik Olsen of Hancock, who turned 28 last week, struck a plea deal with prosecutors that convicted him of second-degree reckless homicide. He was originally charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the death of 21-year-old Jordan Peterson, a UWSP senior from Markesan, in November of 2013.
Olsen is scheduled to be sentenced June 9th.
Portage County prosecutors plan to ask a judge for 5 years in prison and 5 more of extended supervision.
Peterson was found dead by a roommate who returned to their off-campus apartment after a weekend away.
The second defendant, 21-year-old Charlie Phillips-Moore of Madison, is accused of selling the heroin that Olsen bought.
Phillips-Moore has been in prison since last October for an unrelated drug conviction in Dane County. He has a pre-trial conference in the Stevens Point case that’s scheduled for June 1st.
