MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – The state of Wisconsin has to pay legal fees totaling $1 million to the American Civil Liberties Union.
The ACLU represented 8 gay and lesbian couples who had sued the state. They won their suit to overturn Wisconsin’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriages which voters approved in 2006.
That victory became final when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear arguments in the state’s appeal.
The U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals had already ruled against Wisconsin. The victory means the ACLU gets to recover its legal expenses.
