MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Catholics in south central and southwest Wisconsin have pledged over $28 million to help train a growing number of future priests.
The Madison Diocese asked church-goers last fall to help pay for seminary training, after its number of priests in training skyrocketed from 6 in 2003, to 33 now.
The Wisconsin State Journal says parishioners have pledged the vast majority of the $30 million the church is seeking — and the campaign has still not reached out to all the parishes in the 11-county Madison diocese.
Bishop Robert Marlino says he could not be more pleased to see such a large number of people train for the priesthood. He’s made an attraction to priestly vocations one of his top priorities.
The Madison diocese does not have its own seminary. It sends eligible candidates to schools elsewhere — including Detroit, St. Paul, and Rome.
