MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Ninety-eight Wisconsin private and religious schools want to accept tax-funded low-income students under the state’s voucher program this fall.
The state Department of Public Instruction said the 98 schools filed applications by the program’s deadline. Of those, 36 schools applied for the first time — while 62 others were accepted as voucher schools this year, the second year the program has been expanded statewide from the Milwaukee and Racine areas.
Parents who want to enroll their kids in the voucher program have until April 20th to do so. For now, enrollments are limited to 1,000 students outside of Milwaukee and Racine — and if more apply, only the 25 schools with the highest numbers of applicants would be allowed into the program.
The governor’s proposed state budget would end the enrollment limit after the coming year.
