MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald plans to meet with other legislative leaders Monday night, as a delay in finalizing the new state budget enters its third week.
Fitzgerald does not have the 17 votes he needs from his Republican caucus to approve the state’s two-year spending package.
Media reports have said that two Senate Republicans would vote against the budget unless it repeals the prevailing wage for contractors in public works projects — at least for local government work.
That would leave only one GOP defector before the Senate could not pass a budget, since Democrats all plan to vote no.
The Joint Finance Committee version of the budget has yet to be finalized.
The panel has not met for two-and-a-half weeks, while waiting for senators to reach an agreement on major budget planks like the prevailing wage, highway funding, and a financing package for the proposed Milwaukee Bucks’ arena.
