APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – Police in Appleton are investigating a suspicious fire at an apartment building Wednesday morning.
Fire crews were called for a report of smoke coming from a second-floor unit in the 3000 block of S. Chain Drive at 8:49 a.m.
Several units responded and were able to put out the fire quickly.
“What they did find after extinguishing the fire was that the origins of the fire did appear to be suspicious,” says Appleton Police Sgt. David Lund. “We’ve spoken to some individuals at the apartment building who’ve pointed in the direction of one individual whom we need to locate to speak to about the fire.”
Lund did not identify that person, and are working with the Appleton Fire Department and Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations on locating that person. Lund said he believed the person didn’t live at the apartment, but knew some people who did.
No residents were hurt in the blaze, but one firefighter twisted an ankle.
Most residents living in the building’s 8 separate apartment units will be able to return home on Wednesday.
Anyone with information about the fire is asked to call Sgt. Leitzinger at the Appleton Police Department at (920) 832-5541. If you have information but wish to remain anonymous, you can text the word CRIMES (274637) with the keyword APDTIPS at the start of your message.
