HURLEY, WI (WTAQ) – A hiking and biking trail that’s being developed from the northern Wisconsin border through Michigan will be called the “Iron Belle Trail.”
The trail will run from Ironwood Michigan at its border with Hurley Wisconsin, all the way to Belle Isle Park in Detroit.
Over 8,800 people submitted ideas for the trail’s name during the past year. Three finalists were selected, and Michigan residents voted online for the final name.
Governor Rick Snyder proposed the trail in 2012.
Sections are open in both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. When it’s all done, the Iron Belle Trail will consider of a 1,259-mile hiking route, and a 774-mile bicycle path.
Much of it follows the existing North Country National Scenic Trail, which goes from North Dakota to the Vermont-New York State border.
