MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) – A federal judge says actions by two Milwaukee police officers were “reprehensible,” but the jury’s award of a half-million dollars was excessive.
The federal jury found last August that the officers violated Leo Hardy’s civil rights in 2012 when they searched him without sufficient reason, then arrested him when he resisted.
U.S. District Judge J.P. Stadtmueller reduced the award to $60,000 in the illegal search lawsuit.
Published reports indicate more than 60 people have filed similar suits, with at least 4 officers convicted in cases of illegal strip and cavity searches.
