PEPIN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – A western Wisconsin man has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a Hmong deer hunter last November.
43-year-old Kevin Elberg of Pepin had recently had a false imprisonment charge dropped in Pepin County, and he was arraigned Monday on his one remaining felony count of aggravated battery.
A status conference in the case is set for March 31st.
Authorities said Elberg was hunting on his father’s land when 64-year-old Sao Lue Vang of Menomonie wandered onto the property from public grounds.
Officials said Elberg attacked Vang, who suffered a cut liver and other serious injuries. Elberg claimed he acted in self-defense.
A family representative told WQOW-TV of Eau Claire that the false imprisonment charge was dropped because there was not evidence to prove that Vang was held against his will.
