EAU CLAIRE, WI (WTAQ) – A new state budget measure is about to take effect that lets the Amish ignore plumbing and electrical code requirements in their homes for religious reasons.
Also, they’ll be able to ignore mandates to put in smoke-and-carbon dioxide alarms if it goes against their religions.
Assembly Republican Kathy Bernier of Lake Hallie arranged to have the changes included in the budget, after Eau Claire County went after several Amish families for not following codes.
An assistant corporation counsel says the county has received one waiver form — and he expects many more soon.
The Eau Claire Leader-Telegram says the waiver forms are being sent to all 72 Wisconsin counties.
