UNDATED (WSAU-Wheeler News) Nine bicyclists have been killed by motor vehicles in Wisconsin this year, five more than all of last year.
U-W Milwaukee researcher Robert Schneider says vehicles struck bicycles from behind in more than a-third of the most recent deaths. That includes an incident Sunday night in Germantown, in which a hit-and-run driver killed a 50-year-old cyclist. The victim’s name was still not released as of early this morning. The motorist was still being sought. S
chneider has reviewed 3,100 crashes between bicycles and motor vehicles in Wisconsin from 2011-through-’13. He says the motorists were responsible for 58-percent of bicycle deaths — while the cyclists were at fault 24-percent of the time. Causes for the other crashes could not be determined.
