WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) – Some Upper Midwest poultry farmers hit by the avian flu say they’re being hit again by mountains of insurance paperwork.
Ranking Democrat Collin Peterson of the House Agriculture Committee says some farmers had to fill out 80 pages of forms to qualify for indemnity payments.
The Minnesota lawmaker calls it “unacceptable,” and he has taken the matter to the USDA. The agency gives indemnity payments to farms where animals must be destroyed when an illness strikes.
Wisconsin had 10 avian flu cases this spring, and both Minnesota and Iowa had dozens more. Millions of chickens and turkeys had to be destroyed.
Peterson tells the Brownfield Ag News Service the USDA is looking at different ways to handle it.
