MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – A bill to create statewide rules for ride-sharing companies could get final legislative approval today.
The Wisconsin Senate is scheduled to vote on the measure, after the Assembly overwhelmingly passed it a week ago.
Companies like Uber say the bill would make it easier for them to expand throughout the state. That’s because the regulations would be the same statewide, and would remove doubt by some communities on how to deal with the online ride-sharing firms.
Taxi companies oppose the bill, saying the new competition would not be regulated as much as cabs are.
The ride-sharing firms would have to obtain state licenses, check criminal backgrounds of their drivers, maintain liability insurance, and not discriminate against passengers.
If the Senate passes the bill as is, it would go to Governor Scott Walker for his signature.
