MADISON, WI (WSAU) Con artists cheated a 72-year-old Madison man out of $9,000 in a bail-money scam. A caller claimed that the man’s grandson was under arrest and needed bail money.
Police have a suspect in custody who claimed to be a police sergeant. He used the fake name Richard Dudley. The man was told by the caller that his grandson had been arrested after a car accident and was too afraid to call his parents for help. The caller said drugs were found in the car, and that bond was set at $90,000. 10-percent was needed before his grandson would be released.
He only realized he’d been scammed when his actual grandson called him. By then the victim has already mailed the money to an address in Brooklyn, New York.
