WESTFIELD, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network-WSAU) – There are now two hunting deaths in Wisconsin from the opening day of the gun-deer season.
Authorities report a 57-year-old Marquette County man was found dead near Westfield. The victim’s father discovered him on Saturday. It’s believed he died of natural causes in his elevated tree stand. The cause of death hasn’t been confirmed. The hunter’s name hasn’t been released.
The DNR is also investigating the death of a hunter who accidentally shot himself in his ground-blind in Newtown. He’s been identified as Dan Sonnenberg. His body was found on Saturday night. It’s believed he accidentally shot himself.
There were no hunting fatalities in the state last year. There are the 4th and 5th hunting deaths in Wisconsin since 2012.
Hunters were also wounded by their own firearms in Brown, Shawano and Forest counties on opening weekend.
