SAULT STE MARIE, MI (WTAQ) – Shipping boats will have one more day to get in and out of the Great Lakes.
The locks at Sault Ste. Marie were supposed to close at midnight. However, some boats could not get in or out due to an ice buildup at the Soo Locks caused by cold temperatures and gale force winds.
That means the locks will stay open to boat traffic at least through midnight Friday.
Once the locks close, the 2014 shipping season officially comes to an end. Officials said there was record traffic — and the final numbers are due out next week.
