WASHINGTON ISLAND, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Authorities continue to search for a pair of missing 20-year-olds who went kayaking off Washington Island without life jackets.
According to Washington Island Police, around 6:48 p.m. Saturday, Washington Island Fire, Ambulance, and Police were sent to Wickman Drive after hearing reports about kayakers leaving without life jackets and not returning.
The missing people include a 20-year-old man measuring 5 feet 11 inches, weighing 195 pounds. The man wore khaki shorts and has brown hair. The other person is a 20-year-old woman measuring 5 feet 1 inch, weighing 95 pounds. The woman has brown hair and was possibly wearing a teal or red/pink swimsuit according to Washington Island Police.
Officers performed a water search and drone operation when they arrived on scene. Light conditions prevented Washington Island fire and mutual aid water operations from continuing their work after 10:00 p.m.
The US Coast Guard also performed water and ground searches until 2:30 a.m. Sunday. It resumed operations at 7:00 a.m. and again suspended operations around 10:45 a.m.
Search operations continue with multiple Door County agencies and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on scene.
