GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Senator Ron Johnson said any gun legislation still needs to protect 2nd Amendment rights.
On WTAQ’s John Muir Show, Senator Johnson said he is a strong defender of 2nd Amendment rights and Government’s job is to do no harm.
“I will insist on very strong due process regardless of what is being proposed.”
The talk of new legislation to help prevent mass shootings has become front and center after recent mass shootings in Ohio and Texas. Senator Johnson says there have been attempts to make progress in the ongoing battle, but the legislation has not stopped the threat.
“I will be insisting on whatever we might pass actually have some impact or effect.”
He said schools are a good example of making some effective changes. The Senator said locking all entrances during the day, teaching kids where to do if they get a notice of a gunman in the school and improving communication are all cheap and effective ways to save lives. He says there is still room to improve that.
“Decades after Columbine, many schools still have not done that. I am going to focus on effective solutions and hopefully ones that everyone can agree on that can be implemented.”
He says taking guns will not guarantee that there won’t be any mass deaths.
“It is a much larger cultural problem.”
