GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Veterans Issues was a topic discussed at a roundtable in Green Bay Thursday.
US Senate Candidate Leah Vukmir got a chance to hear from Veterans in Greater Green Bay.
The Republican candidate is critical of how her opponent Democrat Senator Tammy Baldwin handled the reports she received about the mistreatment of Veterans at the Tomah VA a few years back.
“When she had an opportunity, she did nothing. That to me is disgusting and if she is going to let veterans down, that means she is going to let all of us down and to me, she has let all of us down in Wisconsin.”
She was joined by Representative Mike Gallagher who said they have been working hard to protect Veterans.
“Whether it is giving the secretary the authority to fire employees, passing the Whistleblower Protection Act so that if people wanted to speak up, they are protected.”
Vukmir said lack of respect to Veterans does not sit well with her.
“I am a military mom, and I have to tell you all I can think about is what if that had been my son in that Military hospital.”
She said the drug and opioid abuse reports that Baldwin was presented with should have been dealt with, and nothing was done until a Marine died and Baldwin was exposed.
“Prescriptions were being given out at the tune of 180 at a time. The facility became known as the “Candyland” and that doctor was called “The Candyman”.
Vukmir has been traveling the state speaking with Veterans as a chance to hear what matters most to them.
