BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – Brown County is using the month of September to remind residents to be prepared for the unexpected.
With a proclamation, County Executive Troy Streckenbach is recognizing September as National Preparedness Month. He says families should take time to go over how they would respond to an emergency.
“To look around in their home or in their car to make sure they have the appropriate resources available.”
He says that could include blankets, flashlights, cell phone chargers, food, and water, but each families kit may be different.
Brown County Emergency Management Coordinator Lauri Maki says it is also important to sign up for the Code RED Mobile Alert App.
“Our goal is to be able to notify anyone in the county for a specific situation.”
Maki says they used the app to communicate with residents near flooded roads Monday night and said they continue to update things that use the app for.
“We got a request from the Green Bay Fire Department to send out a message to everyone within a mile radius from the East Town Mall. They wanted us to tell people to stay clear of the area and to not drive on standing water.”
Another example of how the app would be used is in an active shooter situation like the one that took place in Middleton Wednesday.
Communication was needed to keep people away from the situation while it was going on. In Brown County, Maki says that is one advantage of having the counties Code RED Mobile Alert App.
He says had that situation occurred in Brown County, they would be prepared to send messages to people to alert them.
“The potential for Code RED for a situation like that is perfect because if someone is inside, as long as they are signed up with their cell phone number, they will still get the notification.”
You can sign up for Code RED by clicking here. or by downloading the App on an Android or iPhone device.
