SHOREWOOD, WI (MetroSource-WSAU) Students in Shorewood will get to put on their production of To Kill A Mockingbird after all. The school district pulled the plug on the drama club’s performances last Thursday just hours before curtain-time. There were objections about some of the language in the play, including the use of the ‘n-word.’
But Shorewood’s superintendent sent a note home to parents over the weekend that said the play will run on Wednesday. But it will be performed only once.
Student Zephaniah Eiland says it’s important to present the play, uncensored, as a way to talk about race at the school. There were some threats of protests, but none materialized. There were also suggestions that the play be performed without the objectionable language.
To Kill A Mockingbird, a story of a falsely accused black man told through the eyes of young children, contains the n-word. Some students and parents objected to the language. The book of the same title is a part of many high school curriculum, and has also been challenged because of objectionable language.
