MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – The committee that’s re-writing the proposed state budget has scaled back a new provision to let people apply for driver’s licenses online.
On a 12-4 vote Wednesday with Democrats voting no, the Joint Finance Committee said online renewals should only be allowed for new drivers moving from instructional permits to probationary licenses, and then to regular licenses.
Republican Governor Scott Walker wanted to let all drivers renew a license one-time only online.
Law enforcement raised concerns about people going 16 years without having up to date photos of themselves on their licenses.
The finance panel did agree to issuing ID cards to those over 65 that would never expire. The committee also endorsed a budget proposal to let unregistered tractors be used on state highways for occasional personal uses — like parades and antique vehicle club activities.
Senate Democrat Jon Erpenbach of Middleton said the item was vague, and “personal use” could involve a Sunday drive that would back up traffic. Senate Republican Luther Olsen of Ripon said farmers can already drive unregistered tractors on roadways when doing field work.
