MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) – A 15-year-old boy was charged Wednesday as an adult in the shooting death of 14-year-old Tariq Akbar in Milwaukee last Friday night.
Matthew McMillan faces a count of first-degree reckless homicide.
Prosecutors said McMillan fired shots into a group of a dozen people who were watching Milwaukee’s July 3rd fireworks show.
Officials said Tariq was with friends and brothers at the time, and the shooting was the result of an online fight on Facebook over a girl. Police said the victim was not involved in that spat.
The charges were filed the day after a vigil for the youngster, in which a poet said the death robbed the world of a “young Barack Obama.”
Meanwhile, Milwaukee Police continue to investigate the murder of a 13-year-old boy early Wednesday.
83 people have been killed in Wisconsin’s largest city this year. That’s just 3 short of the total number of homicide victims for all of last year.
