LAC DU FLAMBEAU, WI (WTAQ) – A $4 million federal grant will help fight substance abuse in Wisconsin Indian tribes.
The Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council says it’s working with state officials to address a rise in youth binge drinking and prescription drug abuse.
Council director Carol Wright says the grant will help 4 tribes with the highest needs adopt preventative measures. She says it’s crucial to bring in specialists and create data systems — and it will be most beneficial to adapt the programs to each tribe’s culture.
The tribes to be involved are the Lac du Flambeau, Menominee, Lac Courte Oreilles and Bad River.
Wright says community assessments will keep track of their progress, and show which areas of prevention need work during the grant period.
