MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – New voters in Wisconsin could register online, under a bill which had a public hearing Tuesday.
The Assembly and Senate elections’ committees heard comments on letting voters with state IDs and drivers’ licenses register on a secure state website.
People could also post new addresses, and the data would have to be entered within 20 days of an election.
The bill does not eliminate on-site voter registrations at clerk’s offices, and at the polls on election days.
Republican sponsors say the online signups would eliminate errors in paper registrations, and improve security that would reduce the chances of voter fraud.
The Wisconsin State Journal says several Dane County Democrats have withdrawn their support for the bill. They say it limits options for seniors, college students, and the poor — and the measure is moving too quickly to address the Democrats’ issues.
