GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Bike Sharing in Green Bay will be on a one-year hiatus this summer.
The city is looking for a new partner, after last year’s service LimeBike, has changed its focus and moved its services out of the city.
The move includes a stronger focus on scooters and electronic-assist bikes and is focusing on bigger cities, leaving cities the size of Green Bay out.
Common places the bikes were used were downtown, UW-Green Bay campus and along the Fox River Trail.
Matt Buchanan, Economic Development Specialist says just one season with LimeBikes in the community proved successful.
“We recorded almost 4,600 rides taken in that time by almost 2,200 riders.” Those numbers should attract another service, said Buchanan.
The city will need to form a task force and develop a Request for Proposal once they find a partner.
“We will start working on this process over spring and ideally, we would like to find another provider not too far down the road.”
One issue to work around is cost. Lime did not have a cost to the city or taxpayers.
“I think there might be one or two others that do not have any cost associated with them and there are several that have a very high cost.”
He says it is not very likely that the city will be able to go with any service that has a cost associated with it. Buchanan says it will take longer to find a new bike sharing service.
That means most likely bike sharing will not be an option for people in Green Bay this summer. new service in place by fall.
