FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) – Governor Tony Evers was in Fond du Lac Tuesday morning to see first-hand the destruction that flooding has left in the area.
The Governor met with officials at the Fond du Lac fire station on Main Street and then had the opportunity to tour a private home.
“I’m working with state agencies to see if there’s a possible way to provide assistance for all those in need,” says Governor Evers.
Over three hundred homes in the area were damaged and one was totally destroyed.
In the entire state, there were around 1,100 homes that sustained flood damage.
Around twenty-five-percent of the homes damaged didn’t have flood insurance.
“It takes around thirty days to get approval for flood insurance,” explains Governor Evers. “We need to make sure that people are adequately protected in that area.”
While in Fond du Lac County, the damage to public infrastructure is being estimated at around $320,000.
According to Brian Satula with Wisconsin Emergency Management, that total, unfortunately, is not enough to qualify for federal assistance.
“Even if the County of Fond du Lac meets that threshold, the state needs to make its threshold as well,” he explains. “So as I mentioned early on, we’re far from it, but have [a] period of [a] couple weeks.”
The county threshold to apply for federal assistance is set at $380,000 of damages.
More than $8 million of damages is needed by the state.
“So we measure all of that and we recommend to the Governor to ask for [a] presidential declaration,” says Satula.
