FREEDOM, WI (WTAQ) – Severe Weather season is approaching and one area school district spent Monday morning helping 4th graders be prepared
The STEP or (Student Tools for Emergency Planning) Program came to Freedom Elementary Monday.
The program is run by Wisconsin Emergency Management.
School Principal Tammy Lipsey says about 115 students were taught how to prepare, assemble an emergency kit and talk about what they learned with their families.
“Mom, where would we meet or Dad, where should we go? They may have questions that only a parent can answer because every house and every situation is different.”
She says starting the talk and allowing the families to take over creates the avenue for the conversation to occur.
Lipsey says at the fourth grade level, they wanted to make sure kids came home ready to be prepared, not scared.
“We did not talk about the scary side of it. We talked about what can we do to be prepared and it will give them some information to make good decisions.
The students all received their own STEP Emergency bags.
The 2019 STEP program is supported by a contribution from AT&T and Wisconsin Wireless Association.
