OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – The Oshkosh Area Humane Society has taken in a pair of exotic animals, which most recently had been impounded by police.
A dwarf caiman and a Burmese python became the property of the shelter after they were seized from their owner by police.
The shelter isn’t properly equipped to handle the animals, so arraignments have been made for assistance with the Madison Area Herpetological Society.
Each municipality has its own regulations on what animals are allowed. according to the center.
“Before considering acquiring an exotic animal, please make sure to check your local regulations. Not doing this places a burden on local animal organizations and unfortunately, the animal typically pays the price,” says OAHS Admissions Manager Cari Tetzlaff. “We would like to ask the public to do their research before acquiring any exotic animal. Sadly, the standard level of care most exotics can expect to receive in the average home is neglect. These species have specific housing, dietary and general care needs that can be difficult for the average person to provide,” says Tetzlaff.
She says that the caiman will live at a wildlife and nature center with a skilled adopter, while the python will be in foster until an adoption, which is already lined up, takes place.
