MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – Be careful with what toys you’re buying for the holiday season. Wisconsin consumer protection director Michelle Reinen says a simple glance at the packaging can make sure it’s appropriate for the child you’re buying for.
“Take a few minutes to review labels. They can tell you about the suggested minimum age and age range for using a product. They’ll indicate if they’re small parts, sharp edges, magnets, or other choking or suffocation hazards.”
Be sure the toys you’re buying this holiday season are the right ones for your young family members. Reinen says anything with a plug or batteries should come with testing labels.
“Look for industry standards and testing verifications like ASTM and Underwriters Laboratories or UL about electronics, heating elements, art materials and toxicity, or just toys in general, that they meet the current safety standards that are out there.”
Also be sure to buy those toys from trusted sources, and if there are batteries or plugs involved, look out for required tests and the U L label.
