MADISON, WI (WHBL) — Wisconsin travelers can often use a little help navigating the roadways, especially when winter weather makes roads dangerous or when accidents or construction force detours.
Since2009 the Wisconsin DOT has offered such information – first with the 511 phone number and website, and now with the all-new 511 Wisconsin mobile apps for Apple and Android devices. DOT Secretary-designee Craig Thompson announced the upgraded 511 Wisconsin Traveler Information System on Thursday.
Calling 511 is still available, but there’s now an interactive voice recognition system that allows the caller to name a road, county or a destination and get relevant information. Through the new apps you can set up a route and get personalized information as soon as you’re connected – and with the app running in the background, you’ll get audible alerts on incidents and closures as they occur.
Communications Manager Jon Riemann noted the integration of all elements of the system – meaning that once you’ve set up your route, you’ll get your personalized info on all platforms – web, app or phone.
