OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – The 50th anniversary of the moon landing will be commemorated at EAA AirVenture with an appearance by one of the Apollo 11 astronauts.
The pilot of the command module on the moon mission, Michael Collins, will speak on July 26 at the Theater in the Woods on the AirVenture grounds.
Another Apollo 11 astronaut, Joe Engle, is scheduled to join him.
“Even a half-century later, the Apollo 11 mission stands as one of the great human achievements of all time,” says Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs, who coordinates AirVenture features and attractions, in a news release. “We are honored to have Michael Collins, Joe Engle, and others take us back to the memorable ‘one giant leap for mankind.’ We know this will be a hugely popular evening program that will make EAA AirVenture 2019 even more of a must-attend event.”
Along with astronauts Neil Armstrong, the first person to set foot on the moon, and Buzz Aldrin, Collins was part of the July 1969 mission. The astronauts safely returned to Earth and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean four days after the moon landing took place on July 20.
AirVenture runs from July 22-28 in Oshkosh.
