CALUMET COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – High winds over the weekend are giving residents along the lakeshore of Lake Winnebago a front-row view at a familiar sight, ice shoves.
Those ice shoves are being seen most prominently along the east shore and residents note that they can form quickly.
Additionally, they could be dangerous to homeowners as well.
“I’m not concerned yet, we will see what mother nature brings,” says resident Dan Bloedorn. “This is something that happens often.”
According to him, the ice shoves have started to pop-up in the past few days as high winds have been swirling locally.
“I would say it started to move here about three days ago,” he says. “Started to push up on the neighbors and there are a few more bigger piles.”
Actually, some officials are surprised that it took this long for them to appear.
“We haven’t seen a lot of action in this past week from what I expected with the high winds,” explains Adam Backus, director for the Calumet County Parks Department.
What happens next is really out of anyone’s hands.
Ice shoves tend to be unpredictable and could go in two very different ways based on the immediate weather forecast.
“It all depends on the year, if the ice cooperates it could melt and sink,” he explains. “But like last year it could break up and have high winds and push on shore.”
