OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) – The trial is underway for a Winnebago County man charged with a drunken driving crash that killed two young girls after the vehicle he was driving was struck by a train in December of 2017.
Shawn Schettle is facing a total of nine counts, including two counts of homicide by intoxicated use a vehicle that killed Emily Mueller and Jessica Roby.
According to the criminal complaint, Schettle didn’t have a valid license and admitted to smoking marijuana and drinking vodka before the crash on December 22, 2017.
The trial is scheduled to last four days.
According to the complaint, a witness told police that Schettle had left a residence, returning later, and “said the car got hit by a train and that he bounced out of there.”
Schettle borrowed a car, even though he didn’t have a valid license, according to the complaint, and following the crash he gave police varying accounts of what happened, but admitted to smoking marijuana and drinking vodka beforehand.
While it’s not admissible in court, a preliminary breath test showed a blood alcohol level of .074.
