FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) – A highway construction project is set to start soon after clearing a legal hurdle on Monday.
The Highway 23 project will begin in late May after Monday’s deadline passed without a claim filed against the project.
A 19.1 mile stretch of the highway between Fond du Lac and Sheboygan will be expanded to four lanes.
The project is also looking to increase traffic safety by improving some intersections in that stretch.
1000 Friends of Wisconsin, which is based in Madison, previously put the project on hold in 2015 due to a lawsuit.
Citing the idea that it would displace residents, farms, and businesses, the group opposed the expansion.
The full project is set to be completed in 2022, while construction in 2019 will continue into mid-November.
