DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) – Spring is here, the Masters are two weeks away and the Golf season is in full swing.
At least that’s the case at Ledgeview Golf Course in De Pere.
Director of Golf Steve Payant says they have the advantage of usually being the first to open and last to close.
“I think our high elevation helps,” Payant says. “It drains really well and we have miles of drain tile underneath this golf course.”
Payant says the end of March is usually when they try to open, but April snow last year delayed opening weekend.
Now that the course is open for 18 holes walking, there is one more milestone to reach.
“We are looking at getting out to cut the greens on Wednesday or Thursday and if that goes well, carts could be out a week or two after that.”
So far, golfers are hitting the course and are happy with what they see.
“I am sure there are spots out there. The frost is still coming out of the ground and it freezes at night. By the afternoon I am sure it gets a little soggy where balls are plugging.”
Payant says some mornings are a little cold yet, but it is not stopping golfers.
Over 300 hit the course this last weekend.
He says golfers are coming out in large early season to get clothes for the season and they are fully stocked with golf apparel ahead of the “Tradition Unlike Any Other” in April.
“Some of those players are wearing these clothes and we have it in stock.”
He says that increases when The Masters, the season’s first major gets underway.
Payant says the end of March is usually when they try to open, but April snow last year delayed opening weekend.
“If we are open, they are golfing.”
