WAUKESHA, WI (WTAQ) – After months of laying the groundwork, Governor Scott Walker said for the first time Monday morning that he’s running for president.
The Republican Walker tweeted his intentions around 5:30, saying “I’m in.”
He said on a YouTube video, which you can watch above, “America needs new, fresh leadership with big bold ideas from outside of Washington to actually get things done.”
Walker is the 15th Republican to enter the race for the White House next year. He’ll make his announcement official Monday evening in a speech in Waukesha.
Walker’s advisers expect him to highlight his battle against unions and his three election victories in Wisconsin since 2010.
After he signed the state budget Sunday, Democrats again claimed it was less about Wisconsin and more about appeasing his national conservative voters.
If he becomes the party’s nominee, Democratic pollster Paul Maslin says Walker will have to show that his political successes have shown “real results.”
